Diary of Madline

by Eddie Choo Wen Yi

My artworks explore the boundaries and edges of the basic elements that make up drawing, namely dot, line and shape. In thinking about pushing the edge forward, I have used driving in my car as a medium, as the ‘drawer’, in creating these elements. The act of driving documents my daily journey, itself becoming a ‘diary of madline’ that span different pathways, the journeys undertaken are filled with different, uncontrollable factors such as the weather of the day, the terrain and structure of the roads and land itself and the condition of the traffic. These all contribute to the factor of randomness as well as ’madness’ at the same time retaining a quality of mechanical control - that is the car as the machine doing the actual drawing.

This has become my drawing installation indicating  my journey in this exploration of the basic elements of drawing. I as the driver of the car, and the ‘live’ element in this drawing contribute as well to the result of the drawings as they record in lines and gaps the breaks and stops that i have made along the way, reflecting as well my daily and chosen routes.

My main concern is about the possibilities of drawing and its fundamental elements.
